Event 1: California Science Center
For the Event 1 Assignment, I chose to visit the
California Science Center. It was an extremely enlightening experience because
I have not been to a science museum since I was a little kid. When I walked into the
science center, it brought back many memories as I saw the many young children excited
to see what the museum had in store for them. As I walked through the center,
the one thing that caught my eye was the intricate design of the motion
simulator. According to the museum, a simulator is a “ride that simulates an
apparatus that generates test conditions approximating actual or operational
conditions.” Thanks to the art involved in the creation of the simulator, the
cool design was what initially drew me to check out this apparatus. However,
after completing the ride, I was also able to learn so many interesting things
involved with science. This is a perfect example of art and science (Week 1) coming
together to teach us all about art, science, and technology.
As I began to ride on the dynamic, full motion ride
simulator, I was instantly caught off guard by just how real the experience
felt. As soon as the ride began, a screen appeared with images and loud noises to
display a realistic space shuttle take off. Inside the capsule, the images and
noises trick your senses in order for you to think you are actually
experiencing this takeoff. The detailed graphics by the artists displayed the creativity
that went into creating this simulation. After finishing the ride, I was able
to learn all about the ways that NASA uses simulators in order to teach pilots
and prepare astronauts. Additionally, in relation to science, surgeons are able
to learn how to perform new innovative procedures as well. This experience definitely relates to
our Week 1 content of the combination of science and art; it was super awesome
to be able to relate the content that we learned in lecture to a realistic
experience at the science center.
All in all, my experience at the California Science Center was definitely a memorable one. Throughout the entirety of walking through the museum, I was struck by the skilled details of the artists that helped design the museum. This creativity, combined with all of the vast science lessons to be learned, was pivotal in constructing an alluring exhibit for myself and the enthusiastic children there. If I got the chance, I would definitely visit the California Science Center again. I absolutely recommend the science museum to anyone who is interested in science and or art!
Hi Abi,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like such a fun and unique experience! The dynamic, motion ride simulator sounds so cool, and it is amazing how technology has advanced to such an extent, so that the simulation can feel so real. Great post, and I look forward to reading more!
